Madsen – Malzkorn’s Rock’n’Roll: 23 days left

01/23/2008: Madsen, on the Elbe near Gorleben.

I have an old love for the Wendland – which was once almost forgotten, located between two sides of the GDR and one side of the Federal Republic of Germany. Until it was discovered by the nuclear industry and the nuclear repository was built near Gorleben. To this day, Gorleben is a symbol of resistance against the power of the nuclear industry – many opponents of nuclear power have stayed and have lived in Wendland since the late 70s and 80s: The landscape and it’s villages have a gentle beauty and a moment of forgetfulness of time that are deeply touching.

The „Madsen“-Band come from the Wendland – the picture was taken on the Elbe (which is also my home river) in small boats on a cold winter day: for a cover story in the Visions magazine. It is my most distant band portrait, and at the same time one of my most intense images.

The “5” on the mooring post in the river happened to be there. We laid 100m of cable – on the bank there was a Fresnel lens on a high, heavy tripod, connected to a 2000 Ws flash generator. To illuminate the Elbe.

23.01.2008: Madsen, auf der Elbe bei Gorleben

Ich habe eine alte Liebe für das Wendland – das mal als Dreiecksland fast vergessen zwischen zwei Seiten DDR und einer Seite BRD lag. Bis es dann von der Atomindustrie entdeckt wurde und bei Gorleben das atomare Endlager entstand. Bis heute ist Gorleben Symbol für den Widerstand gegen die Macht der Atomindustrie – viele Atomkraftgegner sind geblieben und leben seit den späten 70ern, den 80ern im Wendland: Das Dreiecksland hat eine sanfte Schönheit und einen Moment von Zeitvergessenheit, die tief berühren.

Madsen kommen aus dem Wendland – das Bild entstand bei Frost imWinter auf der Elbe für eine Titelgeschichte im Visions Magazin, die auch mein Heimatfluß ist. Es ist mein distanziertestes Band-Portrait, und gleichzeitig für mich eines meiner dichtesten Bilder.

Die „5“ auf dem Dalben, dem Festmacherpfahl im Fluß, war zufällig da. Wir haben 100m Kabel gelegt – Am Ufer stand auf einem hohen, schweren Stativ ein Stufenlinser, angeschlossen an einen 2000 Ws starken Blitzgenerator. Ich habe also die Elbe ausgeleuchtet.
