Smashing Pumpkins – Malzkorn’s Rock’n’Roll: 16 days left

In 1991 I started taking photos at club shows – I was in the “Markthalle” almost every evening. There were no requirements, no restrictions for the photographers – most of the time I was the only photographer, I was able to photograph the entire show (even at the Nirvana show Nov 1991 this was the case) – even flash photography was possible.

And it was possible, if you simply asked, to go backstage after the show and take a few more pictures “just like that”. I often sent these pictures to the bands.

So here are two very, very early pictures of the Smashing Pumpkins for you – on that January evening in 1992 they played in front of perhaps 100 visitors in the small club above the large hall. Six months later they returned to the sold-out large hall.

The originals are a 35mm b&w-negatives that were scanned for the exhibition. The prints have a format of 45 x 30 cm.

1991 hatte ich begonnen, regelmäßig in Clubshows zu fotografieren – fast jeden Abend war ich dann in der Markthalle.

Für die Fotografen gab es keine Auflagen, keine Restriktionen – meistens war ich der einzige Fotograf, ich konnte die gesamte Show (selbst bei Nirvana war das so) fotografieren – selbst blitzen war möglich. Und es war möglich, wenn man einfach fragte, nach der Show Backstage zu gehen und noch ein paar Bilder „einfach so“ zu machen. Oft habe ich den Bands dann diese Bilder geschickt.

Hier also für Euch zwei sehr sehr frühe Bilder der Smashing Pumpkins – an diesem Januarabend 1992 hatten sie vor vielleicht 100 Besuchern im kleinen Clubraum über der großen Halle gespielt. Ein halbes Jahr später kamen sie in die ausverkaufte große Halle zurück.

Die Originale sind schwarz-weiß Negative, die für die Ausstellung eingescannt wurden. Die Drucke haben das Format 45 x 30 cm.
